King sends condolences to Burma leader

His Majesty the King yesterday sent condolences to the leader of Burma over the devastation caused there by the tropical cyclone over the weekend.

"The Queen and I are deeply saddened by the news that Cyclone Nargis caused heavy loss of lives and severe damage in your country," he said in the message.

It was sent to Gen Than Shwe, chairman of the so-called State Peace and Development Council, the official name of the military junta. The military regime calls the country "Myanmar".

"We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to Your Excellency and through you to the people of the Union of Myanmar and their bereaved families for the tragic and devastating losses," the King said.
