KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 (Bernama) -- Mercy Malaysia is sending a four-member relief team to Yangon, Myanmar, to assess the situation there following tropical cyclone Nargis which has left 15,000 dead and 41,000 missing so far.

In a statement Tuesday night, Mercy Malaysia said the team would be headed by its executive committee member Dr Heng Aik Cheng.

Other members of the team are relief operations deputy head Rossimah Mohamed, programme officer Hafidzi Ahamd Bunian and communications and fundraising head Shamini Darshini.

Describing the situation in Myanmar as very serious, it said: "We hope to be there as soon as possible to provide great need for shelter, water sanitation and emergency medical treatment. These are important things that can save lives," it said.

Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar on May 2, causing a huge devastation and making hundreds of thousands homeless.

Mercy Malaysia said the relief team would also assess the type of immediate aid required. For a start, the team will be sending water purification sachets, medication, tarpaulins and plastic sheets for temporary shelter.
